Competition among new engineering colleges in Bhubaneswar hots up

As the second counseling for admission into engineering colleges begin on Wednesday, 27 new institutes are keeping their fingers crossed regarding filling up the vacant seats. This year, more than 10,000 seats have been added by these new colleges to the existing 20,200 seats.

Competition among the new colleges has taken an ugly turn as only 40% seats in these colleges have been filled up in the first counseling held in July-August. Some of the new colleges have even failed to fill up even 10% of the seats available.

Interestingly, the non-resident India quota available in both the old and new colleges has not been filled up due to increase in the seats, one-month delay in counseling process, non-availability of study loans to students seeking admission in the engineering discipline.

However, those colleges having good infrastructure, academia and locational advantage have performed better than others with two-third of their seats already filled up. Old colleges like, Bhubaneswar based Silicon Institute of Technology, C V Raman College of Engineering, NM Institute of Engineering and Technology, Gandhi Engineering College, Orissa Engineering College, Krupajal Engineering College, Koustav Institute of Self-Domain etc have been preferred by students for their good rankings and infrastructure.

Among the new colleges, Aryan Institute of Engineering and Technology and KMBB College of Engineering and Technology, Vivekananda Institute of Engineering and Technology, Synergy Institute of Engineering and Technology, Shivani Institute of Engineering and Technology appear to have been preferred by the students and parents for their infrastructure and good faculty.

The Aryan Institute of Engineering and Technology principal and former dean of Orissa University of Agriculture and Technology and the government-run College of Engineering and Technology, Prof Satyanand Swain told "The ET", "Our institute has come up over an area of 40 acres at the lush green Aryan Bihar in the, only seven kilometers away from the Biju Patnaik International Airport. We have made it a point to provide in-campus hostel facilities to avoid time loss through long travels from the capital city by the students".

"Besides, our College has all the modern amenities like air-conditioned class-room, a library in a large separate block with 'provisions of open access system', all modern laboratories and workshop. We are happy that in the very first year of its existence, we have got overwhelming response from students and parents from the state and neighbouring Bihar, Jharakhand and West Bengal. We are sure that within this week, we will feel up the remaining 70 out of 240 seats", Mr Swain added.

Mr Swain made it clear that only colleges who can provide quality infrastructure and education would ultimately survive the fierce competition among the new institutes.

First GREEN College in India

Hi All,

Do you know which is the first 'GREEN' college in India? It's Vivekananda Institute of Technology, popularly known as VIVTECH. The campus is set up in a sprawling 40 acres of land surrounded by greenery and beautiful landscaping. VIVTECH is conscious of the global warming and pollution issues. That's why special emphasis has been given on reducing the pollution level at VIVTECH. The central area of the building has been kept vehicle free. Different departments of the college are connected through skywalk.

VIVTECH has a proposed plan to come up with a beautiful garden, lawn, water fountain, sit out space etc. very shortly. The idea of creating such ambience is to get the feel of close proximity to nature.
